The Bolognese was in ancient times, a pure-bred of noble origins. During the 13th century it was considered a symbol of wealth, often a fashion accessory for the ladies of aristocracy. Many historical personalities were seen with this dog that embodied luxury and wealth, some examples being:
"Commoners" back then had no chance whatsoever to own one of these special dogs. By the end of World War II, the Bolognese had almost become extinct, with only a handful of breeders in the world. The first modern Bolognese were registered by the kennel of Sna Maristella Ogno in the 1950's. The first Bolognese was imported to the U.S. in 1986. The breeder, Dorothy Goodale is credited along with the introduction of this breed into the U.S. as saying, "This is the smartest breed I have ever worked with."
